SHADOW REBORN
Written by Helen Vader

The night when the Shadow reappears
Will be like any other night
The owls will hoot their murky song
The stars will shine with still delight

There won't be signs of the coming storm
No clouds to conceal the crescent moon
No blazing Dark Mark to reveal
That ghosts of the past will haunt us soon

We never pronounce the Shadow's name
Pretending we can trick the doom
And yet one moonlit summer night
Shall see the flowers of death abloom

And yet on a cloudless summer night
The flowers of hatred shall bloom once more
And he shall stand amidst the graves
More terrifying than e'er before

For thirteen years the Shadow lay
Alone and friendless, all forlorn
One vision burning in his mind:
The night when he would be reborn

For thirteen years the Shadow lay
Consumed by flames of piercing pain
One hope was keeping him alive:
The night when he would rise again

The night when the Shadow was reborn
Was just like any other night
The owls were hooting a murky song
The stars were shining with still delight

There was no sign of the coming storm
No clouds concealing the crescent moon
No Dark Mark in the sky revealed
That ghosts of the past would haunt us soon

And yet on that starry summer night
The flowers of evil bloomed once more
And there he stood amidst the graves
More terrifying than e'er before

Author's Note:

While I was working on this poem, I suddenly noticed that the rhythm nicely corresponds with the melody of Loreena McKennitt's The Mystic's Dream. I couldn't be more elated if I got a salary raise (though that would be a treat, too), for I've always regarded my poetry as something to be sung rather than recited. But as I sadly lack the ability to put my verse to music, I must rely on Lady Fortune to provide surprise gifts like this one. I hope Loreena's fans will enjoy this bonus!
