BETRAYED
Written by Helen Vader

I fear this pain will never disappear:
like brand of Cain it burns me from inside.
The death of one I used to hold most dear

is more than I can bear when in my pride
'twas me who brought about his horrid end-
like brand of Cain it burns me from inside.

And even though to save my dearest friend
with all my heart I tried to do my best,
'twas me who brought about his horrid end.

No human words can tell how I detest
the beasts who tore his body from his soul-
with all my heart I tried to do my best

and yet I helped them to attain their goal.
I can't forgive, however I might try,
the beasts who tore his body from his soul.

He was too young to suffer and to die;
I fear this pain will never disappear:
I can't forgive, however I might try,
the death of one I used to hold most dear.

Author's Note:

This is my first HDM fanfic. I have only read the first part of the trilogy so far, but hopefully I haven't trespassed in any way against canon. The 'they' referred to in the poem are both Lord Asriel and Mrs Coulter, even if technically only he was responsible for Roger's death; morally, though, I think both are to blame.
