ALL HALLOWS DAY
Written by Helen Vader

The leaves fall from the trees
So light, so fallow
The sun shines in the sky
So bright, so yellow

The hips laugh from the bush
So red, so cheery
Beside thy grave I sit
So sad, so weary

Author's Note:

Traditionally, people in Slovakia remember their dead friends and relatives on November 1 (All Saints' Day) by visiting their graves and decorating them with flowers and lighted candles. This poem "came to me" during this holiday back in 1994. It was my first readable attempt at poetry in English, so I tend to be rather sentimental about it.
